That Ain’t Right

acute math joke

Sorry, Mr. Caption guy, but acute angles are angles less than 90 degrees.  A 90 degree angle is a right angle.  So riddle me this, if I were to take that image and multiply it four times, would it be a joke for squares?

I apologize if you find my sense of humor to be a bit obtuse.

There are 10 types of people in the world.

Posted by MathYou on July 1, 2015 in Funny Pics |

When I was in high school, I used to sign yearbooks with the message: “There are 3 types of people in the world: those that can count and those that can’t.”  When I got to college and started studying computer science, my eyes were opened and I learned that there’s actually 10 types!

Are You Smarter Than a First-Grader From Hong Kong?

Posted by MathYou on June 19, 2015 in Cool |

This isn’t really a comic.  Right now this image and similar ones like it are circulating around the internet.  The story is that this is from an admissions test for first grade students at an elementary school in Hong Kong.  We are shown this image:

Hong Kong First Grade Test Question

So in 20 seconds can you figure that answer out?

16 06 68 88 ?  98.

What is the pattern?

Well how about if I showed you this:

Hong Kong First Grade Test Hint

Does that help?  You can scroll to the bottom for the solution if you are still stumped.

Someone had a bit of fun and added some political correctness:

Solution: OK! so if you were unable to figure out the answer, it was 87.  The original image shows a parking lot but the numbers are upside down, which would make sense if you were pulling into the parking space.  The car pictured appears to have backed in.  Ok, not terribly tough if you’re 30.  But at 6?  How old were you when you learned to tie your shoes?  That is a pretty rough question.  I’d like to see more!

Edit: Even the Today show discussed it!

No Love for Pi

Posted by MathYou on June 18, 2015 in Newspaper |

pi will go on forever

Whenever I see Pi mentioned in a comic, I get hungry.

Note to self: Don’t publish math comics before dinner.

P.S. Buy some pie.

Update: Came Across another comic with the same joke.
